Kolsai Lakes Tours from Almaty

Kolsai Lake is the most recognisable name among Kazakhstan's mountain lakes, and the reputation is earned honestly — it's a chain of three lakes, stepping up the same gorge in the Kegen district of the Almaty region, roughly 300 km and about four hours from the city, with a stretch of dirt road at the end near the village of Saty. Most first-time visitors don't come here alone. In our experience, 95% of guests combine Kolsai with Charyn Canyon and Kaindy Lake in one route, since all three sit along the same direction out of Almaty, and driving to Kolsai means passing the canyon regardless. That's why we default to offering the combination rather than a lake-only trip.

Only the Lower Lake is reachable on foot without a serious hike — about 500 metres from the parking area along a wooden boardwalk that runs along the shoreline, and the walk can be stretched from 500 metres up to 1–3 km depending on how far you want to go. The Middle Lake is a different proposition entirely: an 18-kilometre round trip, with roughly 600 metres of elevation gain. The Third Lake, 28 kilometres round trip, is realistically out of reach for a single day — very few people make it there and back before dark. We say this upfront because we'd rather set the right expectations than sell a hike nobody can actually finish. Horses are available for hire on site — from 7,000 tenge for a roughly 40-minute ride, up to 25,000 tenge for a round trip toward the Middle Lake — and no riding experience is required, since handlers lead the horse or walk alongside for anyone who hasn't ridden before.

Renting boats or catamarans on the Lower Lake costs 10,000 tenge per hour — one of the few places in the region where this is actually permitted, unlike Kaindy or Big Almaty Lake. Fishing is allowed too, roughly from early June into autumn, provided you bring your own rod and get a permit at the eco-post; on a single-day excursion, though, you can't take the catch with you — if you're staying overnight at a guesthouse, you can ask them to cook it. Two restaurants sit right on the lake, Tary and Kolsai Lakes Town, both useful if you haven't arranged your own food for the day.

We run Kolsai as a private, individual tour, not a seat on a shared bus. You get your own 4x4 or minivan, a personal driver-guide, and a route that can shift around your pace — shorter if you're travelling with kids or older relatives, longer if you want to push toward the Middle Lake. A single day covering all three locations — Charyn, Kolsai and Kaindy — runs about 15 hours and roughly 650 km round trip; two locations without the third comes to around 13 hours; one lake alone, about 12 hours.

There's a clear line in how we name things, and it matters when you're booking: an excursion means one day with no overnight, a tour means two days or more with accommodation included. As an excursion, Kolsai can be booked alone, paired with Charyn, paired with Kaindy, or as all three together — the single-day format covers the Lower Lake and doesn't include the trek to the Middle Lake by default, though that can be added on request. As a tour, the same combinations stretch across two days, which spreads the driving out and leaves more time to actually walk around each lake instead of sitting in the car; if you want the hike to the Middle Lake included, it's built into the itinerary rather than squeezed into a single day. Either way, the vehicle and driver-guide are personal to your group, whether that's one traveller or a corporate booking for a large group.

If you're extending the trip into an overnight tour, Kolsai has more accommodation options than most of our other directions. Two hotels sit directly on the lake itself — the most scenic, and the most expensive. A couple more hotels are located about 5 km before the lake. In Saty village, roughly 10 km out, you'll find a wide spread of guesthouses, cottages, yurts and glamping setups to choose from.

One practical note worth planning around: bring cash. On-site payments — horse rentals, boat hire, the eco-post fishing permit — often can't be made by card or QR code, since connectivity at the park is patchy.
